Making: This blog has a new look and a new logo. What do you think?
Drinking: A daily cup of chamomile tea, which was recommended by my favorite Dr. Aunty to help with my anxiety. First cup was hard to swallow, but five days later I am used to the taste now.
Reading: Just finished 'The First Woman' by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. There is
so much to unpack, I am already working on a blog post...
Playing: Not playing anything. Any recommendations?
Wishing: Just did a 30 minute session of yoga. I wish I never
lose the energy to make time like this for myself every week.
Dear future Maria, please don't get bored with this...
Enjoying: I look forward to my one hour of exercise each day! wait... what!? I know I am also wondering who this Maria is too. It really helps though. I work away my frustration. I sleep soooo much better. I am also enjoying cooking A LOT. I am making curries, stir-frys...anything and everything I put my mind too. Maybe my wifey genes are kicking in lol... However, I burnt my hand reeeeally badly a couple weeks ago, thankfully it's healing very well. You can't tell at all now.
Writing: I want to do a #JournalingChallenge. Currently working through my procrastination issues...
Most likely I will follow Jo franco's 30 day prompts.
Loving: Skillshare. As we already know my soul relishes in learning!
Eating: Oat porridge with banana, chia seeds and honey. Very Nice!
My mum was right. I need to find some almond butter.
I want to delve into the art of making smoothies soon..
Watch this space.
Needing: To panel beat the car and spray paint it. Got into two mini accidents in January.
Knowing: The feeling of doom/dread. I am trying to accept there is not much I can do about it
when it comes. It follows me around like a shadow....
Always reminding me that I am not worthy of anything good, and that I am hopeless.
I keep telling it to do what it needs to do, but it enjoys torturing me in my head.
Thinking: Too much... all the time without stopping. Thinking and thinking and thinking about things I have no control over.
Giggling Over: The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, I don't have a favorite yet but Whitney is coming along strong. Then there's Bridgerton season one, loved the costumes!!! Probably would have appreciated it more if I was in my naïve-uninformed-early-twenties, but still
a lovely risk for Shonda Rhimes to take. Can't wait for season two.
A word of advice.
Please don't take what I am about to say lightly,
because this is real gold and diamond encrusted wisdom that I am giving you for free.
Here goes...
Read the next sentence carefully..
You NEVER fully recover from your first serious incident of burnout.
From that moment onwards you... yes you are tainted.
Tainted like the yellowish after effects of a bad liver infection.
I am talking about the kind of burnout that leaves you stuck in bed for days.
I am talking about the kind of burnout that leaves you zombie-like
unable to enjoy a good book or your fave TV show .
I am talking about the type of burnout that induces vomit burning
deep at the back of your throat,
every time your phone pings with a new notification.

I am talking about the type of burnout that induces vomit burning
deep at the back of your throat,
every time your phone pings with a new notification.
You are now polluted.
You pushed yourself right off the edge and
now you've got to learn how to live with this new body and mind of yours.
Here's the thing though...
Life will do what it has always done.
Life will keep happening.
Blessings will charmingly covort into your realm of reality
Opportunities will shimmy in announced and unannounced
but the impaired you is now cautious
Sometimes even suspicious of the universe's timing.
Because just yesterday you were seated in hospital at 2 am,
worried,
deeply worried,
while you were waiting for your Dad
to complete his emergency treatment.
Ups and Downs come together and separately.
But now you have learnt something new about yourself
You cannot naively reach out to grab every good fortune or luck that comes your way.
You know the consequences of greed.

But now you have learnt something new about yourself

You know the consequences of greed.
You know your limits.
You played the game for a while,
and learnt you really don't need to have it all.
and learnt you really don't need to have it all.
Your mental boundaries are now a life vest .
I mean what good is a gift if it will eventually drown you?
That's why I haven't been writing as much...
I am figuring out how to bloom
I am figuring out how to thrive
I have reached the 'much has been given' level
and I am learning the' wisdom' bit on the job
and I am learning the' wisdom' bit on the job
I walk around now asking God, 'How?"
"How do I manage this?"
"How do I leverage this?"
"How do I enjoy this?"
"How do I not forget this?"
"How do I live with this?"
"How do I take care of my self amongst all this?"
I am still gathering the answers
And life is doing what God told it to do
I was inspired by this Carrie Hope Fletcher's You Tube Video. I hope to one day be as endearing yet succinct when I converse with people.
Every time I watch her videos, I feel like she's an old friend sitting down to have a good honest sincere chat with me about life and things...
So she came up with a list of prompts for content creation in May, and I wanted to join and make something....not a video but maybe some blog posts..right? I am late to the party though.... as its already 27th May. So I decided I would just write a line for each word prompt and make it all one loooooong random blog post.
So here you go, here's to the month of May!
Running:
I really don't know how people can keep up a daily running schedule without getting bored. I commend you if you are one of those people. I need that kind of commitment to exercise in my life. Share your secrets with us , we get bored of the same exercise after just two months...smh

I never got the chance to study astronomy in school, and I feel like I missed out. Seems I have been living in this bubble that consists only of earth. I hope to change this soon & learn more about our galaxy & universe. As much information as is available I guess...

Jam filled doughnuts heated in the micro wave for 10 seconds can cure a negative thought spiral. Trust me on this.

Making: I am painting now, I bought my own set of water colors along with some brushes, some pencils, some sharpies and two sketch books. I try to paint in the weekdays after work. I am attempting to build my skills for the drawing pad that I want to eventually start using regularly (Right now it only gets pulled out when I am feeling brave😣 ). There is something very liberating about creating without restriction, and also creating for nobody in particular but yourself. It is all thanks to @paintklanight for helping me pick up the brush. I attended two of their events and can't wait for the next one. Notice that I have not called myself an artist. There are real professional artists out there. I am not an artist, I simply paint.
Drinking: Ummm....I have started drinking Apple Cider Vinegar in water again. I take a bottle to work every other day...750ml to be exact. I mix two table spoons in my bottle of water. My stomach is a very happy place right now 😊😊😊
Reading: I just finished reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi...wow! Loved this book💖💖💖. It follows the linage of two sisters from the days of slavery to the present moment. Took me a while to finish with all the other things I had to get done but it was totally worth it. It's a must read, go out and get it if you can.
Playing: Played some google art games the other day. I am considering getting my own set of board games.
Wishing:I usually leave this section blank but this month I am pining for a whole bunch of things, too sensitive to put in this blog post. 😭😭😭
Writing: The daily free writing exercise is quite fun; when I can force myself to actually sit and do it. I pick the strongest sentence from it and afterwards see if I can write some fiction, but I need to stick to a story line for a little longer than 30 minutes.
Loving: You Tubers, I discover new ones every week. Now I don't even bother to watch TV anymore. I just catch up with their daily vlogs. You can even get your exercise routine from You Tube....yoga, Pilates, dance...it's all there!
Eating: Popcorn...I mean who doesn't love popcorn? Also..why is it when you start eating popcorn it's impossible to stop? You have to get to the very last one.😅
Needing: The furry square pillows in Mr Price. I might as well have a pillow spree, you only live once..right? Well as much of a spree as possible given the goals I must achieve this year.
Wearing: Lipstick. It's a staple now that I have figured out how to use lip liner 💃💃💃 God help me if I get my hands on a good highlighter or bronzer....😀😀😀
Knowing: I think I say the same thing every taking stock, but prayer and God-time is important.
Thinking: About Louise L Hay's death. She was the author of the first self help book I ever bought. I know we are not supposed to admit to buying self help books, but I do buy them because adulting is tough. Took me more than a decade to understand what she was trying to say 😂. I needed some life experience I guess. Very simple and subtle points but very hard to master. RIP Louise L Hay, you certainly won't be forgotten. Those affirmations require work buts it's good homework to have.
Giggling Over: The first paragraph of Luvvie Ajayi's new book, I'm Judging You -The Do Better Manual

Comment below, What does the month of September hold for you?
Making: Time to write is a struggle. It takes me time to break down a story and turn it into something that flows and makes sense. I don't like being rushed, I feel like stories need time to marinate like a good piece of chicken or meat. I need time to break down the moment and create it's meaning. I have to play with the words to find the right fit and believe me when i tell you it's tough finding the right words and putting them together in the simplest way possible. I have to figure out what the message is and how the reader will receive it. But I am a procrastinator when it comes tough challenges, I am afraid to fail so I wait and wait and wait...till i can't wait anymore because the deadline is looming 😨😨😨. I will have work to change this with my writing. I will have to adapt my weekly schedule. Time to write must be created so my stories have time to marinate. My stories need to be like the best barbecued chicken anyone has ever tasted!
Drinking: Less milk. I am trying to decrease the dairy and gluten in my life. I think I may have overeaten my share of bread, pizzas , pasta, milkshakes...most especially those freakshakes at Javas(they taste like heaven 😍😍😍 ). Time to clean it up. I have to say sometimes my body resists and tries to trick me into a relapse so to avoid this I am doing it gradually. I now drink black coffee. Also I have given up eggs until further notice.
Playing: Nothing. I have failed to find time to play phone games for the last two years. I don't even play with my nieces and nephews any more. I just buy them stuff. Does this make me a bad Aunty? ummmmm
Wishing: Men wouldn't attach so much negativity to love around Valentine's day. I am tired of hearing them drone on and on about how much they do. I wrote about it here
Writing: Creative Fiction
Loving: A new face mask which I wrote about here. And a new hair masque which I will write about eventually.
Eating: Granola and yogurt, who knew they would make such a good combination? So to the people who've been posting breakfast Instagram pictures... I am sorry for being judgmental about the granola. Also along the lines of eating, I had my first meal at Cafe Ceylon. Totally worth it! I hope they maintain their standards because I shall be returning. The food was tasty and fresh. You know how you can tell that the food was cooked a while ago? I didn't get that feeling with Cafe Ceylon. The rice on my plate was HOT🔥🔥🔥 and steaming like they just boiled it.
Needing: To write some blog posts about some of the books I love.
Wearing: Lipstick. I am loving 'Matte Bad Blood' by Urban Decay and also African Queen by Livara at the moment.
Knowing: You can maintain your inner peace and contentment even if people around you are trying to bring you down. You can do it!
Thinking: Constantly thinking about how to achieve my goals in 2017 both professionally and personally.
Giggling Over: Married to Medicine Season 4, Toya pays $10,000 a month in rent!? Eh.... People have money.

The Island and Jackee made us friends
Day 3
My writing muse has no sense of time while on Bulago.
It wakes me up at 3.30 am. Don’t ask me what a
muse looks like because I have no idea! That's why I haven't assigned it a specific gender, all I feel is this persistent nagging
anxiety envelope me. Eventually I give up the tug of war between the thoughts
in my mind and accept the fact that I won’t be drifting back to sleep for a
while. My muse knows we have an important topic to deliberate. The early hours
of the morning are the best times to think through such things. The generator
is off so I use my trusted torch to light up the room. I decide to make my way
to the toilet quietly so as not to disturb everyone’s sleep, but I somehow end
up stepping on every single one of the creakiest of wooden boards along the
way. So much for being quiet….
When I return to
my bedroom, I grab a stash of Jackee’s literary magazines and place them next
to me on the bed. Once I’m adjusted into a sitting position, I start to flip
through each one, totally amazed at all the opportunities in the writing world.
On the boat ride to the island I had asked Jackee
about the possibility of doing a masters in creative writing. I was wondering
whether the experience would be worth it. Anything to do with harnessing inborn
creativity fuels me with energy for life and work, but a masters in creative
writing? Wouldn’t it be a big risk? Masters are a necessary extravagance these
days. The wrong choice can be a painful setback yet the pressure on my
generation to make the right career decisions is immense. We graduated right
into a global depression and every news story at the time told us that we would
inevitable end up earning much less than our parents. So why am I suddenly
thinking about an MFA like some rich family member with a guaranteed inheritance?
I decide that this moment of placidity in the house is
a good opportunity to get down on my knees and pray. I pray for guidance and clarity
of vision.
Today we will
have no classes and no assignments. It will just involve one to one sessions
with Jackee and Crystal about anything we wish to discuss in regards to
writing. I sent my story to them yesterday and I have no intentions of doing any work once
the sun rises.
In fact here is my official To do List :
·
I intend to finish my two books (I have
carried them in my bag for two months. They need to make a permanent exit. Unless
a book is intellectual it should be finished a month from purchase. )
·
Frolic in the pool in my new bikini so
that I can tick wearing a bikini off my bucket list.
·
Take the proposed nature walk around the
island.
·
Enjoy not feeling guilty about focusing on
myself.
·
And of course eat all Alex’s delicious
meals.

salivating...
By 5.00 am I hear the pitter patter of rain begin
outside making me drowsy. After excusing myself from my conversation with God,
I sleep for another hour.
With breakfast done. Lynn (one of the participants) and I head to
the beach. She brings her laptop. I bring my books. But we get distracted and
end up turning our quiet time into a spontaneous photo shoot with Zahara. All
the years of watching every single episode of America’s Next Top Model have finally paid off! Tehehehe. Look at that effortless jumping. Cover Girl *wink wink*
yes that's Lynn jumping with me.
My session with Jackee and Crystal starts a bit late.
It’s clear my story needs a lot of work but their comments make a lot of sense.
I am learning that one can only grow in their writing with the following three
things.
·
by reading good books
·
practicing
·
and good feedback from mentors, friends,
family and their target audience.
It’s rare to find people who will take the time to
really read and critique your work so this retreat is an opportune moment. I
noticed so many holes in my story through their conscious feedback.
Once we were done, I grabbed my To-Do list and started
following it…..
Did I mention that dinner was a barbecue by the beach
and presents from Jackee?
EUPHORIA!

Day 4
I wake up rested. Last year I mourned the fact
that the experience was over so quickly, this time I am not. I am at peace
because I made it back and enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. I
pack my bags and make my Bulago bed for the last time this week, then I head
for breakfast. There is time to stroll by the beach and have insightful
conversations with some of participants about the last three days. It’s been
magical.
Jackee says Seychelles next year. She had better
furfill her promise because I can’t wait!
Bye Bye.

Not trusting my gut when it comes to people.
That is the behavior that needed to change in me. I am learning to do this a lot more.
For the last few years I have not trusted my natural instinct. I have not trusted myself. When my gut told me that someone was really NOT good for me, I ignored my internal voice if everyone around me liked that person.
That is the behavior that needed to change in me. I am learning to do this a lot more.
For the last few years I have not trusted my natural instinct. I have not trusted myself. When my gut told me that someone was really NOT good for me, I ignored my internal voice if everyone around me liked that person.
Then one day, a colleague had the sense to tell me
about myself. I really needed that conversation because, every
moment of every day I was doubting myself and my ability to get things done. I
was scared all the time. I had gotten so used to being scared that I just accepted
fear as a constant companion. I lost my ability to be assertive, all because I let
a bunch of people get to me. I was hoping and praying that I could mold
myself into something different. Someone who fitted in more easily. I think
God knew I needed that particular conversation. I really think God saw that I
was struggling with myself and he said,
“ Wait a minute young lady, I don’t make mistakes, I made you for a purpose sweetheart. I know what I am doing. Trust me”
God spoke through this person. As I mentioned earlier, my colleague firmly told me about myself. This person insisted that I stop
hiding in the background and be myself. They told me that I was doing a good job
and that I needed to show more confidence in myself. That person basically gave me
back to myself through that conversation ( a real Oprah aha moment).
One valuable extra piece of advice they gave me,
“Stop panicking!”
I used to panic because I doubted my ability to handle the
situation. When I forced myself to stop being so anxious, I started to change. I
accepted that I can only give my 100% and leave the rest to God. I now trust
God to do what I have asked. I trust that God has my back. I learnt to trust myself and know that I can
handle the situation. God does listen and respond. It’s a relationship. It’s a
friendship for which I am grateful. All those private anxious thoughts I had, I had no
idea he was watching and listening. It’s
probably the reason I have gained weight, I can relax a little. I can have fun.
I am comfortable with myself.
I trust my gut, if it tells me someone is not good for me. I
trust it. People show you who they are eventually, trust God when he says it’s
not for you.
Dear Queen,
I saw this posted on facebook by Elizabeth Gilbert and I had
to write to you(myself) again.
For a while now I have been privately reflecting on my
voice.
What is my voice?
All those internal conversations while driving home in the
evening traffic have been filled with that question.
What is my voice?
Even those last minute conversations with God before I fall
asleep are filled with that question.
What is my voice?
What would I tell you about our voice if I met you? What was my voice like before? How has it
changed? How have we changed our voice by the circumstances of our life? Did we
ever have a voice?
This whole writing thing forces you to look within. It
really forces you to search within yourself. No one told me how much of writing
whether fiction or non-fiction requires one to pull out pieces of themselves.
Maybe I underestimated the depth of it. I am glad I did not dwell on it so much
in the beginning. I would have been too scared to write. Now here I am looking for pieces of myself to
leave in my stories to make them human.
What is my voice?
I don’t have a clear distinct voice.
I really don’t think I have one yet.
I know who I am supposed to be.
I know what I need to achieve.
I know people’s expectations of me.
But if you ask me who I am…. well we’d need to refer to God
for the answer…
You know what is so funny about this? I am not upset about it.
I am actually glad I can be at a place where I can separate the difference
between what I am supposed to do and who I am. I have space to choose. I can
navigate a bit better instead of hoping it all comes together the way it’s
supposed too. Isn’t that maturity?
Yes, I like this.
That was a little taste of my voice for you. Some confidence
and trust in my ability to handle uncertainty.
We have come a long way my dear.
Let’s keep growing.
Let’s enjoy this next phase of finding our voice. I like what the picture above says...I will catch myself.
Until I write again.
All the best,
Me.
