Watch Love between Fairy and Devil - An Epic Endearing Captivating Xian Xia Drama

Monday, 30 March 2026

I finished this #cdrama as soon as it was released and absolutely loved it. It is my first Xian Xia drama so I really wanted to write about it, but life got in the way, so I’m only now getting around to it.

Here's the back story....

Legend has it that Dongfang Qing Cang (Dylan Wang) of the Moon Tribe became an emotionless monster to gain immense power, killing his father to secure the title of Moon Supreme, and losing 100,000 Moon Tribe soldiers on a path of destruction. To stop him, the first God of War of Shuiyuntian (Cristy Guo) sacrificed herself, sealing Dongfang Qing Cang's army and locking him in the Haotian Tower. 30,000 years later, a disturbance in the Haotian Matrix draws Orchid, a lower ranking flower fairy(Esther Yu) , into the tower. Their meeting triggers a series of events that could once again threaten the three realm world's fate.

My thoughts...

The moment the body swap happened, I was completely hooked. Dylan Wang had me in stitches again and again; his comedic timing was spot on. As Moon Supreme, his presence improved as we moved through the episodes. Actually, Rong Hao (Xu Hai Qiao) and Lord Yun Zhong (Chi Jia) sent more chills down my spine—much more domineering and menacing than I expected.

By episode 9, the couple had totally stolen my heart. That’s when the story really soars, and believe me, every minute is a treat. This is one show where each of our leads have wonderful character development. The show begins with grandeur and somehow finishes even bigger. The supporting cast isn’t just background—they’re intricately woven into the plot, making every subplot shine.  The emotional moments, especially Dongfang Qing Cang with his father and the raw vulnerability that follows when he regains his emotions, left me in tears. I think this is what was missing for me in Prisoner of Beauty. It began well but didn't in my humble opinion sustain momentum.

I only just remembered that Zhang Linghe is in this! He was fantastic, with a beautifully crafted character arc. The contrast between his role as the God of War in the fairy realm and a spoiled second son in the mortal world was so endearing.  He wasn’t even the lead here, but he still stood out. Watching him now in Pursuit of Jade, I can see how much his acting has matured—he feels less like he’s acting and more like he’s truly being.

One reason I usually struggle with Xian Xia dramas is the world-building— with little understanding of traditional folklore---it can be hard to get into. But here, the world-building was much better and the rules communicated clearly.  For example, I have tried and failed to get into Lost You Forever, even though on paper I should love it too.

The costumes were stunning, especially the white glass armor for the fairy warriors and the way the Moon Supreme’s crown sits so perfectly on his head weaved into his hair. I liked every one of Dongfang Qing Cang’s outfits. I hope the costume department won some awards!

But seriously, can someone explain why immortals keep dying on the battlefield? How are they getting poisoned or even sentenced to death? Is it just me? I am confused.

We needed another final episode... cause how could they deprive us of the wedding and only give  us a one minute reunion after all the effort that was put into reviving her !?!?

Anyways....this is a 10 out of 10 for me, even on a second watch. It’s still just as entertaining. Absolutely beautiful!

I watched it on Netflix, but I’m pretty sure you can also find it on Viki and IQIYI.

Watch A dream within a Dream - My 2025 Summer #cdrama hit filled with Charisma, Comedy and Tropes

Watch A dream within a dream - My 2025 Summer #cdrama hit filled with Charisma, Comedy and Tropes

The characters leap off the screen, the plot keeps you engaged, and the humor is contagious.

A Dream within a Dream is  one of my favorite shows of 2025.

Song Xiaoyu (Li Yi Tong) our fearless heroine, is yanked into a scripted universe where she’s doomed at the hands of a villainous lead(Liu Yu Ning). Every attempt to break free only lands her in fresh danger, yet she refuses to give up, battling fate as the story barrels ahead.

While every character bursts with charisma and charm, the show’s playful jabs at #cdrama tropes add a clever twist, turning every episode into a entertaining watch. The cast nails many moments, from laugh-out-loud comedy to heartfelt drama. Episodes 15 and 16, when misunderstandings run wild, had me in stitches.

I’ve unofficially joined the male lead’s fan club—Liu Yu Ning truly owns this role. The opening scene with the Li Sixteen bathed in moonlight was pure magic, and the sweeping CGI camera work left me awestruck. Liu Yu Ning deserves every bit of praise (and pay) for all the OSTs; when you can’t bring yourself to skip the episode intro, you know the song is a winner. Even the tracks he doesn’t sing pulse with energy, adding flair to the series.

For me, the sparks between the leads in Prisoner of Beauty were electric. Here, the chemistry simmers beneath the surface, letting the story and the standout supporting cast take center stage. Both leads shine in their own right. The second lead couple (Riley Wang and Zhu Xu Dan) also shines with wit and resilience, sometimes stealing the spotlight and our hearts.

The Emperor’s (Zhang Lei) animosity toward his son left me puzzled, and the character felt a little flat. I have seen this actor in other dramas and know what he can do. Although their relationship softens by the finale, I still longed for more layers to this relationship.

Chu Gui Hong’s father’s(Zheng Guo Lin) return had me laughing out loud, but I also felt a twinge of sympathy for him. Seeing our second lead hero’s (Wang You Shuo) frustration transform him into an unexpected antagonist adds layers and intrigue to the story.

Every time I see  Chang Long, I know I'm going to laugh. He always plays the same character, though—I just saw him in Yummy Yummy Yummy and wonder if he's ever done anything different.

The costumes struck a perfect balance—not too muted, not too flashy—with inventive touches that fit the show’s unique world. The blend of historical inspiration and imaginative design is stunning. The pink rose gown in episode 13, paired with its intricate headpiece was my favourite.

I get why some viewers are frustrated with the early episodes—it really picks up steam halfway through. I think the slow start is meant to highlight the frustrations of the cdrama world.

A round of applause for the multiple endings—everyone gets an ending! Those final three minutes had me squealing and jumping with joy. I held my breath until the very last second. Spoiler alert - love wins!

A MUST WATCH!
