Taking Stock - Lilayi and Chaminuka, a long weekend in Zambia - July 2022

Taking Stock - Lilayi and Chaminuka, a long weekend in Zambia - July 2022

Making: A legacy... I guess...actually I hope. The first week of July, has given us a four day loooong weekend in Zambia. Time for light exploring and reflection.  One question has been dominating my mind right now. Which part of my life should I sacrifice ? I have no certain answer yet. Like a ping pong ball in  an intense championship match my mind restlessly zooms indecisively  from one option to the next. For the last ten years I worked hard to learn and improve in many areas of my professional life. In the beginning it was rough. I  felt so out of place that I almost quit. My Dad encouraged me to stay and coached me through the difficult times. I prayed a lot too. Eventually I started to have little breakthroughs, I learnt my craft but also learnt about people and how to work with them. It's  a skill we overlook, but interpersonal skills are a rare and critical treasure. A gift that keeps on giving if you know how to harness them well. Moving to another country has cemented in my mind, that I am no longer a student in some areas of my work life. So what's the plan for the legacy? I want it to be fruitful...

Drinking: I had this Sangria at Lilayi Lodge. Y'all look at the size of this Sangria! Definitely worth the price. It was the perfect afternoon cocktail to signal the commencement of four-days-no-work

Reading: I bought two books a while back. Everything is f*cked by Mark Manson and Africa is not a country by Dipo Faloyin. Have you read any of these books? Comment below and tell me what you think.

Watching: Wow...hehehe... where to begin? The list is below. Aside from my usual themes, I really enjoyed three British mysteries that I completed on Netflix.

    Royal Feast
    Angel's Last Mission Love
    Song of Youth
    Mr. Sunshine
    Anatomy of a Scandal
    The Stranger
    Stay Close
    Million Pound Menu
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey
Love on the spectrum US
Selling Sunset Season 5
Late Night
Miss Sloane
The Mystery Of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes
Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend

Listening: Waiting patiently for Beyoncé's new album. I've also got Somebody's Son on repeat these last few weeks.

Wishing: To take more real vacations. Taking time to visit the Lilayi Elephant Nursery, Lilayi Lodge and Chaminuka Lodge was just the mini break my mind needed. It wasn't a long journey, just an hour drive from the city, still I felt like I had left my busy life behind. It was nice to spend time, laugh and eat with a colleague and her family.

Loving: All the scenery at the lodges. My room at Chaminuka Lodge was delightful; they turned the heating on in the evening so that when we returned to our rooms after diner it was warm. They even left two thick blankets just in case the cold was too intense at night. There was a cute little work station which I could have taken advantage of but I vowed not to work for 72 hours. We took a mini game drive in the evening to see the animals; lions, cheetahs, zebra, puku, water buck, elephants, wildebeest , lechwe, sable antelope, bush buck etc.. There was a lively band playing while we ate our buffet lunch and dinner; we sang along and enjoyed our meals . It was refreshing! Looking forward to seeing more of Zambia.

Eating: Not much to report... here... I was eating all weekend. The ribs at Lilayi Lodge. Yummy and large portions like the cocktail.  Fresh bread with butter as an appetizer, it is these kind of details that really matter. We even got to do some cheese tasting at Chamunika, I understand why the choice of drink is wine and not water now.

Knowing: I love my work. I love what I do.

Thinking: Can't wait to take some proper leave soon.

Giggling over: Mark Dasascos'  masterful facial expressions on Iron Chef. Probably the main reason I continued watching the show!

Fitness Update #4 : Pandemic Weight Gain, Recuperation & Rest

Fitness Update #4 : Pandemic Weight Gain, Recuperation & Rest

I felt  King Crissie's tweet in my soul and I want the t-shirt! I hope she eventually sells some.

A whole twelve kilograms gained in the last two years, and each one shows on my face, arms and tummy.

It is bad... it's really baaaaad.

I don't like being in photos anymore.

When I take a selfie I post the 437th one.

Everyone who knows me, then sees me has made it a point to inform me of my weight gain, then wrap their dig in the 'But you look good though.' Maybe it's to soften the sting? It still hurts.  All I can say is working in close proximity of my fully stocked fridge, kitchen cupboards and the gas stove plus the strict lockdowns escalated things.... Life had been fixing it's adult responsibility claws around me and my general coping skills were lacking. I was working out at home with dumbbells/weights, but I had refused to address the stress, grief and burnout that had been piling up over the years. Forgetting that I had left the decade of my 20s and the adaptable metabolism that comes with it, my body went on strike and refused to respond until healthy actions were put in place. I didn't realize how bad in was until in July 2021 I emerged from my apartment to cover a work event and my colleagues' eyes just widened and widened and widened in quiet surprise. The concerned driver asked if I was okay, as I cluelessly lobbed my body into the back seat of the car. Later that week a colleague made a joke about my 'new fat bum' . Then my regular boda boda guy looked at me for a good thirty seconds before responding to my greeting, he then proclaimed, "Eh...you have really been enjoying this lockdown!" And lastly, my former boss was a saint she didn't say a word when we met for lunch,  Lord knows she must have wanted to tell me about myself, but knowing what I'd been dealing with over the last year she bit her tongue. The extent of my weight gain dawned on me after seeing the photos that were taken during our meeting. I  knew I had to act.

As much as I want to, I can't beat science

Yes laugh with me

I repeat, I wanted to use shortcuts and ignore the science of weight loss

However, you can't... you just can't cheat and win with a bad diet, overeating, anxiety, insomnia, stress, burnout etc....

So...I took a few months off from my workout, removed the pressure from myself.

Took time to fix my sleeping pattern, confront my anxiety and intrusive thoughts,

refocus and re-prioritize.

Now I am back in the fitness game, more conscious of what I consume and my general mental health.

Balancing being in a new country, I am learning new things while managing to keep self care at the top of the daily to-do list.

What about you? In the comments tell me how have the pandemic restrictions affected your overall fitness and mental health?  Let's encourage and support each other.

Being an Aunty & Ijeomi Umebinyuo's poetry...

Sunday, 24 April 2022

Last year (2021) on my birthday,
I woke up at 7.30 am on Saturday to carry out Aunty duties.
I drove for 45 minutes  across town to my brother's house.
He had to take the newest female member of our family for routine immunization.

"So many women
so many women
whose blood I carry
so many glorious lives
living inside of me."~ Ijeomi Umebinyuo

Questions for Ada is a must read.
It speaks of, about and for our Grandmothers,
our mothers,
our Aunties,
our sisters,
our female friends
our female cousins,
our daughters,
and our granddaughters.

My mother, my mother's friend's and my maternal and paternal aunties,
all played a part in my upbringing.
I must continue the tradition and be
available for my nieces (and my nephews too!)
So I woke early and drove across town on my birthday,
because my niece who was barely a year into this world
needed to know that she was worth it and so much more!

"I am walking her into sunshine
gathering her beauty
please visit another day."~ Ijeomi Umebinyuo

I have had strong women around me all my life.
They taught me how to be,
they often remind  me who I am.
They told me tales of where I am from,
not just through words but through their actions.

"I want to write about the women that prayed for me
in a language so beautiful English would bow" ~ Ijeomi Umebinyuo

I am immensely grateful to have the opportunity to be an Aunty.
To play with them,
To cuddle with them,
To cook for them,
To laugh with them,
To calm their nerves,
To reassure them that no matter what they are loved and accepted.
My mother is no longer on this earth.
By me carrying out these actions with her grand children
I feel like I give them a little piece of her to keep alive each time.

"you are here. you are becoming
isn't that enough?"~ Ijeomi Umebinyuo

Please go buy Ijeomi's wonderful book here or at your local book store

Taking Stock- First Birthday in Zambia

Making: A new life. I did it. Packed my bags, got on a plane and I moved to a new country during a pandemic. I started a new job. Now let's see what I make of this year...

Drinking: I am trying to return to my two-litres-of-water-a-day routine.
I am taking it slow because I want it to become the norm again.

Reading: I have started my masters studies in public administration- social and public policy .
I spend most of my time reading for coursework.
It has crossed my mind to write about my experience on the blog, not yet sure if I will.

Watching: Wow...where to begin? I have been watching a lot on Netflix and Viki.
Here's my complete list so far

Hotel Del Luna
Inventing Anna
Tinder Swindler
Young, Famous and African
The Ultimatum: Marry or Move on
Love is Blind Japan
Bad Vegan: Fame Fraud Fugitives
Tiger King: The Doc Antle Story
Bridgerton Season 2
Trust No-one : The Hunt For The Crypto King
Lovers of The Red Sky
Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story

Listening: Not much to report here. My podcast game is sadly lacking. Do the ones I listen to as part of my coursework count? The most recent one was about mixed methodologies in policy research.

Wishing: For healing.

Loving: Having a washer and a dryer. Laundry days are so easy and enjoyable!

Eating: The best French toast and blueberry jam instead of birthday cake at 3 Trees Cafe

French toast at 3 three Cafe in Lusaka Zambia

Knowing: I am getting older and it is scary sometimes.

Thinking: I am getting older and it is scary sometimes.

Giggling Over: True Beauty...it wonderfully written fun #Kdrama that shows the awkwardness of being a teenager so well.
